In einer Zeit, in der sich die globale Kunstszene immer mehr dem Bewegtbild zuwendet, hat die Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien beschlossen, die Professur für Film- und Medienwissenschaft, die seit vielen Jahren theoretische Grundlagen zu Kunst und Bewegtbild bereitstellt, nicht mehr nachzubesetzen. Diese Entscheidung ist bereits zu einem früheren Zeitpunkt gefallen, wird aber mit dem Wintersemester 2024 durch das Ausscheiden von Professorin Gabriele Jutz virulent.
Mit dem Stopp der Professur riskiert die Universität, ein für eine Kunstuniversität zentrales Fachgebiet aufzugeben und international an Konkurrenzfähigkeit einzubüßen. Wir – die Hochschüler:innenschaft der Angewandten – fordern das Rektorat sowie das verantwortliche Ministerium auf, keine kurzsichtigen, der aktuellen bildungspolitischen Stimmung geschuldeten Entscheidungen zu treffen und sich aktiv für den Erhalt der Professur mit einem dezidierten Schwerpunkt auf der Kunst des Bewegtbildes einzusetzen.

At a time when the global art scene is witnessing a significant shift towards the moving image, the University of Applied Arts Vienna has decided to discontinue the position of Professor of Film and Media Studies, which has provided theoretical frameworks regarding art and the moving image for many years. Although this decision was reached earlier, it will have a significant impact with the departure of Professor Gabriele Jutz in the winter semester of 2024.

At a time when the global art scene is witnessing a significant shift towards the moving image, the University of Applied Arts Vienna has decided to discontinue the position of Professor of Film and Media Studies, which has provided theoretical frameworks regarding art and the moving image for many years. Although this decision was reached earlier, it will have a significant impact with the departure of Professor Gabriele Jutz in the winter semester of 2024.
By discontinuing the professorship, the university not only risks losing a key subject area for an artuniversity but also jeopardizes its international competitiveness. We – the students’ union of the Angewandte – urgently call on the rectorate and the responsible ministry not to make any short-sighted decisions based on current educational policies and to actively support the retention of the professorship with its dedicated focus on the art of the moving image.

Die Professur für Film- und Medienwissenschaft war eine der Ersten, welche die Bedeutung des bewegten Bildes als Kunstmedium erkannte. Das Fachgebiet umfasst alle Formen künstlerischer Bewegtbilder: Film, Video, expanded cinema (Bewegtbild in Kombination mit Malerei, Fotografie, Installation, Performance, Skulptur usw.), experimentellen Dokumentarfilm, experimentelle Animation und Arbeiten auf der Basis von Screen-Medien.
Die Professur für Film- und Medienwissenschaft war eine der Ersten, welche die Bedeutung des bewegten Bildes als Kunstmedium erkannte. Das Fachgebiet umfasst alle Formen künstlerischer Bewegtbilder: Film, Video, expanded cinema (Bewegtbild in Kombination mit Malerei, Fotografie, Installation, Performance, Skulptur usw.), experimentellen Dokumentarfilm, experimentelle Animation und Arbeiten auf der Basis von Screen-Medien.
Die Professur ist nicht nur in der Forschung, sondern ganz besonders in der Lehre und in der Betreuung von akademischen Abschlussarbeiten aktiv. Durch ihre Beendigung wird das Betreuungsangebot verknappt und laufende Dissertationen sind in Gefahr, nicht in der erforderlichen Kontinuität fertiggestellt werden zu können.
Auf dem Hintergrund der Tatsache, dass Österreich eine der vitalsten und vielfältigsten Experimentalfilmszenen der Welt besitzt und die Angewandte zu dieser Entwicklung beigetragen hat, ist die Beendigung der Professur umso unverständlicher. In einer Welt, in welcher der audiovisuelle Analphabetismus zu einem zunehmenden Problem wird und die kollektive digital fatigue wächst, ist es von größter Bedeutung, dass gegenwärtige und zukünftige Studierende das notwendige Know-how erhalten, um die reiche Geschichte, die Theorien und die Ästhetik zu erforschen, die Künstler und Künstlerinnen dazu gebracht haben, sich dem Bewegtbild zuzuwenden. Verständnis zu wecken für dievielfältigen Praktiken, die heute unsere Kunsträume füllen, ist ein entscheidender Schritt in diese Richtung, und die Film- und Medienwissenschaft mit ihrem Fokus auf Kunst und Bewegtbild spielt dabei eine zentrale Rolle.

The Film and Media Studies professorship was one of the first to recognize the importance of the moving image as an art medium. The study of moving image art includes all forms of artists’ moving images and media artworks: film, video, experimental documentary, experimental animation, expanded cinema (moving images combined with painting, photography, installation, performance, sculpture, etc.), and works based on screen media. The professorship is engaged in research and particularly active in teaching and supervising academic theses. As a result of its closure, the number of supervisors will be reduced, and ongoing dissertations are in danger of not being completed with the necessary continuity.

In a world where audiovisual illiteracy is a growing concern and collective digital fatigue is rising, it is crucial to empower present and future students with the tools to delve into the rich histories, theories, and aesthetics that have led artists to embrace moving images. Understanding the diverse practices that now fill our art spaces is a vital step in this direction. Film and Media Studies, with their unique perspective on artists’ moving images, play a pivotal role in this endeavor.
